Queensland Floods: the blessing of radio
Of all the 'old-fashioned' media radio is the one that is going to last I reckon.
For instance for the people in flood-affected areas that have no electricity. No charging your Iphone! Or laptop if that one is still dry. Most Queenslanders are familiar with extreme weather and always have a battery-operated radio handy. The local ABC radio is doing a fantastic job in keeping the spirits up, firstly by informing everyone of the latest news and developments regarding the flood-situation. People with charge on their phone can ring in and tell their stories, their updates. Local ABC Queensland broadcasts from Rockhampton, a city of 76.000, currently under 9.2 meters of water. The presenters know what floods can be like (their building is sand bagged and under threat) and you can hear it in their remarks and questions.
Even if not under water, people appreciate listening to radio because while you're doing something else you can still be informed or entertained by your favourite station. Busy in your car on way to work? Radio. For the latest headlines. Beats the net. I reckon...
